ST. THOMAS MORE PARISH SCHOOL
A NATIONAL EXEMPLARY SCHOOL
The doors of St. Thomas More Parish School opened for the first student body, grades one through eight, with a population of 513, on September 7, 1965. In 1981, kindergarten was offered at the school, increasing the student body by 60 students. In 1986, the school community considered and responded to the plight of working/single parent families. In the fall of 1987, an additional building was completed and an Extended Day Program was started. The following year, an Early Childhood Program was started with a class of sixteen pre-kindergarten students. Today the school campus consists of 28 classrooms, cafeteria, library, science lab, art room, computer lab, two gymnasiums, music room, clinic, a preschool playground and elementary playground, and an athletic field.
Since St. Thomas More Parish School began educating students in 1965, the school has been faithful to its mission of providing educational excellence in a Christian atmosphere. St. Thomas More Parish school has grades preschool (3 and 4 year olds) through eighth grade. With annual enrollment averaging 475 for the past 5 years, St. Thomas More is one of the largest Catholic elementary schools in the Houston area. St. Thomas More Parish School was honored in 1994 and 2014 by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 2014 only 50 private schools in the nation received this award. This award identified St. Thomas More Parish School as one of America’s outstanding schools to which other schools and communities look for ideas and inspiration.
In addition to being cited as a National Exemplary School, the continuing commitment of the school community (administration, faculty, staff, parents, and the extended church membership) to academics makes STM one of the most sought after schools in the area. As in previous years, over 70% of the students enrolled in kindergarten are expected to graduate from the school, reflecting the stability of the population.
